Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper was to investigate the lubricity of palm biodiesel (PB)–diesel fuel with plastic pyrolysis oil (PPO) and waste cooking biodiesel (WCB).

Design/methodology/approach

Three quaternary fuels were prepared by mechanical stirring. B10 (10% PB in diesel) fuel was blended with 5%, 10% and 15% of both PPO and WCB. The results were compared to B30 (30% PB in diesel) and B10. The lubricity of fuel samples was determined using high-frequency reciprocating rig in accordance with ASTM D6079. The tribological behavior of all fuels was assessed by using scanning electron microscopy on worn steel plates to determine wear scar diameter (WSD) and surface morphology. The reported WSD is the average of the major and minor axis of the wear scar.

Findings

The addition of PPO and WCB to B10 had improved its lubricity while lowering wear and friction coefficients. Among the quaternary fuels, B40 showed the greatest reduction in coefficient of friction and WSD, with 7.63% and 44.5%, respectively, when compared to B10. When compared to B30a, the quaternary fuel mixes (B40, B30b and B20) exhibited significant reduction in WSD by 49.66%, 42.84% and 40.24%, respectively. Among the quaternary fuels, B40 exhibited the best overall lubricating performance, which was supported by surface morphology analysis. The evaluation of B40 indicated a reduced adhesive wear and tribo-oxidation, as well as a smoother metal surface, as compared to B20 and B30b.

Originality/value

Incorporation of PPO and WCB in PB–diesel blend as a quaternary fuel blend in diesel engines has not been reported. Only a few researchers looked into the impact of PPO and WCB on the lubricity of the fuel.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to design and develop a new functional coating system for aerospace AL7075-T6 alloy that would evaluate the mechanical properties of the coating.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper outlines the scratch adhesion characterisation of Cr/CrAlN coating using a combination of radio frequency (RF) and direct current (DC) physical vapour deposition (PVD) magnetron sputtering. The surface morphology, microstructure and chemical composition of the Cr/CrAlN film were evaluated by optical microscopy (OM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) integrated with energy-dispersive X-Ray spectroscopy (EDX) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The film-to-substrate adhesion was measured by a scratch test machine manufactured with a detection system, motorized stages, penetration depth sensors, optical microscope and tangential frictional load sensors.

Findings

The AFM and ultra-micro hardness results showed an increase in surface roughness to about 20 per cent and hardness to about 74 per cent. Moreover, the film-to-substrate adhesion strength of 1,814 mN was obtained with PVD deposition process.

Research limitations/implications

The main limitation of this work is caused by PVD deposition process. Besides, surface defects such as pinholes contribute to a decrease in adhesion strength.

Practical implications

The higher hardness of CrAlN coating is used to improve the properties of softer aluminium substrates. This hardness prevents ploughing-induced wear and provides greater adhesion strength by preventing coating delamination.

Originality/value

Until now, CrAlN is coated only on ferrous alloys. It has not yet been tried on aluminium alloys. Moreover, coating functionality depends on higher adhesion and failure mechanisms involved in the film-to-substrate system, which is significant in aerospace applications.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to explore the effects of mineral diesel fuel carbon soot (MCS) and biodiesel carbon soot (BCS) on the lubrication of polyalphaolefin (PAO) and diesel fuels.

Design/methodology/approach

Two styles of carbon soot were prepared from the natural combustion of mineral diesel fuel oil (MDO) and biodiesel oil (BDO). Tribological tests were conducted on a high-frequency reciprocating rig. Friction surfaces were characterized using three-dimensional laser scanning confocal microscopy and Raman spectroscopy.

Findings

The addition of MCS and BCS to PAO could reduce friction in most cases. MCS had a negligible effect on the wear for contents not exceeding 1.0 per cent. By contrast, BCS exhibited a considerable negative influence on the wear resistance even at low contents. For diesel fuels, MCS reduced both friction and wear, whereas BCS substantially deteriorated the lubrication of BDO. MCS formed a Fe3O4/C composite lubricating film on the friction surface. BCS also entered the contact region, but it did not form an effective Fe3O4/C composite lubricating film.

Originality/value

This work compared MDO and BDO from a different perspective, i.e. the effects of their combustion carbon soot on the lubrication of lubricating oil and fuel oil. The significant negative effect of BCS on the lubrication of lubricating oil and BDO is a problem that could occur in the industrial application of BDO.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to evaluate the effect of biodiesel additive in fuel system of diesel engines to reduce wear characteristics. Biofuels are environmentally friendly and renewable alternatives to mineral-based fuels and cause low pollution; thus, they can be used to comply with future emission regulations to safeguard environmental and human health.

Design/methodology/approach

Two types of diesel fuel, pure petrodiesel and soybean oil, were compared for their fuel properties and tribological performance. The ball-on-disk wear testing method was used as an analytical tool for this purpose. The lubricating efficiency of the fuels was estimated using a photomicroscope to measure the average diameter of the wear scar produced on the test ball.

Findings

The wear experiments showed that the wear scar diameters were 1.13 and 0.94 mm for lubrication of the pure petro-diesel and soybean oil, respectively. However, fatty acids containing biodiesel typically have thicker molecular layers than mineral pure petro-diesel, and thus can reduce the wear rate of the sliding metals. This improved the boundary lubrication conditions and the lubricity of the fuel. Biodiesel fuels are effective lubricity enhancers and have greater lubricity enhancing properties than petro-diesel.

Originality/value

The ability of biodiesel to be highly biodegradable and its superior lubricating property when used in compression ignition engines make it an excellent fuel. Biofuel is an attractive alternative fuel to various energy sectors, particularly the transportation sector. Biofuel has immense potential for use in a sustainable energy mixture in the future.

Abstract

Purpose

Alternative sources for petroleum fuels have been the prime concern of most of the environmentalists. It is also a concern for economists due to the depletable nature of the fossil fuel. Vegetable oils are considered as good alternatives to diesel as their properties are close to diesel. This work aimed to produce a fuel by adding different proportions of de-oiled neem cake with diesel and to conduct experiments to find out its performance, emission and combustion characteristics.

Design/methodology/approach

At present, biodiesel is commercially produced from the vegetable oils by esterification processes. Because most of these oils are edible, its cost restricts the usage. The de-oiled cakes after crushing the seeds containing around 2 per cent of oil with less fatty materials are aimed in this study.

Findings

The fuel is prepared by adding dry neem de-oiled cake powder at different proportions ranging from 3 to 25 per cent by weight with diesel. Experimental results reveal that the fuel has the potential to reduce smoke, CO emissions simultaneously along with marginal increase in brake thermal efficiency.

Originality/value

In this published research work, the neem oil is used as biodiesel blends with diesel. Here, the authors have used neem de-oiled cake as a replacement for diesel.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to design and test a user satisfaction model to evaluate the contribution of biodiesel production and consumption to the sustainability of a semi-urban community in the Cowichan Valley in British Columbia Canada. This case study is part of a larger research study whose purpose is to create a model for an index of sustainable community production and consumption.

Design/methodology/approach

The theoretical approach selected was the national indices of consumer satisfaction models. The methodology was qualitative and quantitative, in-depth interviews were used to learn the opinion of active and non-active consumers of biodiesel. The interviews were transcribed and analyzed with specialized software for qualitative studies. A structural equation model, whose innovation is the inclusion of the sustainability variables, was designed and analyzed with statistical technique partial least squares.

Findings

The designed model and methodology were useful to identify the principal cause variables of consumer satisfaction of biodiesel in two types of users: active users and non-active users. The determination coefficient R2 of the latent variables satisfaction and loyalty for the prediction of biodiesel active users model is 0.82 and 0.72, respectively, while the result for the non-active users model is 0.90 for satisfaction and 0.73 for loyalty. Sustainable consumption at community level is statistically significant as a direct cause of the variable sustainability of the community for both models, and in turn the sustainability of the community variable has a significant impact on loyalty for the active users model.

Originality/value

This case study is part of a larger research study whose purpose is to create a model for an index of sustainable community production and consumption which will be measured longitudinally to detect changes in the sustainable consumption of the community members.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate the tribological properties of tetrahedral diamond-like carbon (DLC) films in self-mated contacts in the presence of additivated and non-additivated vegetable oils. DLC films have high practical value due to low friction and low wear properties. On the other hand, vegetable oils are considered to be lubricants for future due to its resource renewability and biodegradability. Sometimes different chemical agents are added to vegetable oils to further improve its tribological properties. Thus, the tribological study of DLC films against additivated oils becomes important.

Design/methodology/approach

The tribology tests were conducted in a four ball tribo-meter under the boundary lubricated conditions.

Findings

Ta-C DLC exhibited 80 per cent lower wear rate under Zinc dialkyldithiophosphates (ZDDP)-added oil compared to that of base oil. In contrast, the friction coefficient under additivated oil was slightly higher than the base oil lubricated case. Moreover, the carbonyl band area as well as the viscosity change of ZDDP-added oil was much smaller than that of base oil. Therefore, ZDDP reduced the wear of DLC film and prevented the oxidation of base oil during tribotests.

Originality/value

This is the first work on the tribological properties of ta-C DLC lubricated with corn oil with and without anti-wear additives.

Abstract

Purpose

Engine component endurance is related to fuel properties. Decreasing the sulfur content of a fuel reduces its lubricity, thus damaging engines and fuel systems. Therefore, promoting the use of a biofuel must involve assessing the functionality and lubricity of the fuel.

Design/methodology/approach

The ball-on-ring (BOR) wear tester was applied to determine the optimal additive concentration and the mechanism of reduction of the wear and friction of the diesel engine fuel injection system. The lubricating efficiency of the fuels was estimated by using a photomicroscope to measure the average diameter of the wear scar produced on the test ball. An optical microscope and scanning electronic microscope were used for wear surface examinations.

Findings

The wear test revealed that the wear diameter of the steel ball lubricated with either the pure petrodiesel or 20 Wt.per cent Jatropha curcas biodiesel blends was 1.36 or 1.05 mm, respectively. The experimental results indicated that when Jatropha curcas biodiesel was added into petrodiesels to reduce friction, the wear resistance of the fuel blends increased concurrently with increasing Jatropha curcas biodiesel concentration. This was attributed to the presence of stearic acid in Jatropha curcas biodiesel blends. Stearic acid has a strong affinity for metal surfaces; therefore, a chemical coating was formed between the two motion surfaces to protect the two contacted surfaces from wear. Therefore, the proposed Jatropha curcas biodiesel can be used to effectively enhance the lubricity of a petrodiesel under the condition of boundary lubrication.

Originality/value

Using biofuels as the fuels for diesel engines can assist developed and developing countries in reducing the impacts of their fossil fuel consumption on the environment.

Abstract

Purpose

For the dramatically developed high voltage direct current (HVDC) power transmission, HVDC cables play a vital role in the power transmission across seas and connections with renewable power sources. However, the condition monitoring of HVDC cables is still a challenging research topic. This paper aims to understand the influence of external factors, namely, current, cavity location and material properties, on partial discharge (PD) characteristics in HVDC cable in a numerical way referring to the refined Niemeyer’s model.

Design/methodology/approach

The influences of the three external factors are studied by a proposed numerical model for DC PDs based on the modification of a conventional PD model for AC voltage via a finite element analysis method.

Findings

The external factors can influence the discharge magnitude and discharge repetition rate via affecting the electrical conductivity of the material: DC PD is more frequent and with higher discharge magnitude when the cavity is closer to the conductor or the current through the conductor is higher. Both DC PD repetition rate and average discharge magnitude in long-term aged material are lower than virgin material. The effect of discharge on insulation degradation becomes decreasingly significant.

Research limitations/implications

The current work is based on the numerical modelling of DC PDs. Further experimental validations and comparisons are essential for improving the model.

Practical implications

The studies of the influence factors for PDs under HVDC voltage can benefit the research and practical power transmission on DC PDs, contributing the design and test of DC PDs in HVDC cables, exploring the understandings of the DC PDs’ mechanism.

Originality/value

This paper, to the best of author’s knowledge, first studies the influence factors on DC PDs based on the numerical modelling work.

Abstract

Purpose

High voltage direct current (HVDC) cable is an important part in the electric power transmission and distribution systems. However, very little research has been carried out on partial discharge under direct current (DC) conditions. Niemeyer’s model has been widely used under alternating current (AC) conditions. This paper aims to intend to modify the Niemeyer’s model considering both electric field and charge dynamics under DC conditions, and therefore proposes a numerical model describing partial discharge characteristics in HVDC cable.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper intends to understand partial discharge characteristics under DC conditions through numerical modelling. Niemeyer’s model that has been widely used under AC conditions has been modified, taking both electric field and charge dynamics under DC conditions into consideration. The effects of loading level or current through the conductor, cavity location and material properties on partial discharges have also been studied.

Findings

Electrical conductivity is important in determining the characteristics of partial discharge under DC conditions and discharges tend to happen in short when the cavity field exceeds the inception level under the parameter values studied in the paper.

Research limitations/implications

Building the numerical model is the purpose of the paper, and there is lack in experiment and the comparison between the simulation results and experiment.

Practical implications

The proposed model provides the numerical model describing partial discharge in HVDC cable and helps understand the partial discharge mechanism under DC voltage.

Originality/value

To the best of the author’s knowledge, this paper is a very early research on the numerical modelling work on partial discharge under DC voltage.
